Asset value per share takes the value of a firm's assets and brings it to the shareholder level.
To approach it in a slightly different way, let's look at another important financial statistic. A key measure of a public company's profitability is earnings per share. This divides a firm's profit by the number of shares it has outstanding. Asset value per share does the same task, only instead of measuring earnings, it considers the company's assets.
Asset value per share comes up with particular frequency in the world of mutual funds. In this process, a fund's assets are divided by the number of shares outstanding. However, in the case of a mutual fund, the shareholders are the fund investors and the assets are the investments the fund has purchased on their behalf.
