The basic service was free. Think: Shmoop. You can graze on our content all day long until your heart's content. But if you want to get serious diagnostics for test prep or take an accredited course for college credit, then you have to pay us (yes, a whopping couple hundred bucks a year for all of our stuff; we think it's a seriously good deal.)

So the Shmoop business model is a freemium one. Free for a big block and then a premium price for usage above and beyond.
