Manufacturing Resource Planning - MRP II
Categories: Company Management
We’re a superintendent for Bon Temps Construction, and the new project we’ve been assigned to is pretty exciting: we’re laying a new runway at the nearby municipal airport. While this project might seem pretty straightforward—draw straight line, cover with asphalt—it’s actually got quite a few pieces and moving parts. That’s why we’re oh so glad our company invested in an MRP II system: a manufacturing resource planning software system that allows us to schedule, track, and manage everything we need to get this runway done. We’re talking equipment needs, material lead time, inventory, subcontractor scheduling, forecasting, manpower, audits, quality control, budget…it’s a one-stop shop for everything project management, and we love it.
MRP IIs came about after MRP Is were found lacking. They were great resource planning tools, but they didn’t tie into Bon Temps’s accounting system or provide other desired functionality. Our MRP II does. In fact, MRP IIs are so awesome, especially in manufacturing and construction industries, that it’s hard to imagine running major projects—or a major manufacturing facility—without one. And while they’ve been superseded by ERPs in some companies and industries (ERPs are enterprise resource systems, and they do everything an MRP II can do, but also allow companies to integrate their human capital management processes), tech companies are still supporting MRP IIs today for all the clients out there that need them to do business.
