  • Daniel watches Gwendolen play roulette. He wonders if she's pretty or not.
  • Daniel returns Gwendolen's necklace to her.
  • We flash back to when Daniel was thirteen. He starts asking his tutor too many questions about the popes of history and all of their illegitimate children. All of a sudden he starts wondering about who his parents are and if it's possible that Sir Hugo is actually his father.
  • Sir Hugo sends Daniel to Eton, a fancy British prep school. During his first vacation, Daniel comes back home to find that Sir Hugo has gotten married to Lady Mallinger.
  • Daniel goes to Cambridge to study math. He doesn't get a scholarship because he spends too much helping his friend Hans try to get one.
  • Daniel tells Sir Hugo that he wants to drop out of Cambridge and study abroad. Sir Hugo tells him that's fine.
  • One day, Daniel goes out rowing on the Thames and sees a girl standing on the riverbank about to drown herself. He intervenes and brings her to live at the Meyricks' house.
  • Gwendolen and Daniel meet face-to-face at Diplow; Gwendolen tells him she thinks he cast an evil eye on her gambling.
  • Later, Daniel tells Gwendolen that he disapproves of gambling because you make a gain of someone else's loss.
  • Daniel starts to become more and more interested in Judaism. He goes to the synagogue in Frankfort and meets an old man who asks Daniel who his mother is.

  • Daniel starts spending a lot of time wandering around the Jewish neighborhoods of London, partly hoping to find Mirah's family. He finds a shop with the name "Ezra Cohen" above the door.

  • Daniel goes back to the Cohens' home for supper on the Sabbath. He meets Mordecai formally – he had met him earlier in the bookstore in passing.
  • At Christmas, Mr. Vandernoodt fills Daniel in on all of the gossip relating to Grandcourt and Lydia Glasher.

  • When Daniel gets back to London, he goes straight to Mordecai's place and tells him and Mirah that he is Jewish after all.
