No Country for Old Men Chapter XII Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • We'll sum up Bell's thoughts for you this way: Well the world is goin to Hades in a handbasket and I'm too old to do anythin about it, but at least Ive got my wife Loretta, because she's the best, and if I didnt have her, I wouldnt have nothin.
  • Bell retires, leaving the courthouse for the last time. But he doesn't feel good about it. "It was defeat. It was being beaten. More bitter to him than death" (12.2.1).
  • Bell tells himself to get over it, and he starts his truck.
