Marion and Norman are parallel characters in a lot of ways. Both are criminals. Both are mad, in some way. "We all go a little mad sometimes," Norman tells Marion, and she agrees. Norman's madness destroys him—and Marion's moment of uncharacteristic criminality destroys her too.
