A few positions are obtainable with only a bachelor's or master's degree in chemistry or a related field, but you'll be more of a drone, and you certainly won't have a crack at the big money. The vast majority of research jobs require a PhD (source). Most laboratory supervisors aren't comfortable doling out a lab coat to someone without a doctorate. It just doesn't feel right.
