I Don't Wanna Marry the Text; I Just Wanna Read It

Want to scare kids off of literary theory forever? Have them read this piece in its entirety. It's long, but seriously, we included it because it's got some thoughtful points. You may be able to use an excerpt or two from it to get students writing and thinking. For example, they could respond to whether Lily's "fate has been shaped by the capitalist values of her society or by its patriarchal power structures"—or maybe it's not shaped by either. Regardless, we thought you could find some neat-o stuff in this link.
