[Coop and Dino singing]

00:13

Skip has never been very good at reviewing his work.

00:16

Hm…maybe that’s why they call him “Skip.” [Skip sat at his desk with his thumbs up]

00:18

Okay, so…that’s just his given name, but…some coincidence, right?

00:22

Anyway…Skip keeps getting in trouble because he refuses to take a little extra time to

00:26

make sure his work is in tip-top shape. [Skip handing over his work]

00:27

The result? Some very sloppy paragraphs.

00:30

As Skip well knows, in paragraphs, all sentences point back to the main idea.

00:35

At least…they should.

00:36

That's what it means when we say that effective paragraphs have unity. [Coop pointing to effective paragraphs on a chalkboard]

00:39

Otherwise, you’re just throwing a bunch of random stuff in there.

00:42

That works well for a stew…not so much for a paragraph. [Mother preparing a stew for Skip]

00:45

But…Skip can’t be bothered. After all, there are video games to be played, and sleep [Skip playing video games]

00:49

to be…slept. Too bad he can’t just put in a tiny bit of effort…

00:52

because putting together an effective paragraph really isn’t that tough!

00:56

The only thing that matters is that the sentences point back to the main idea. [Yellow arrows pointing to the main idea of a paragraph]

00:59

They either develop the idea…i.e. expand on it…

01:02

or support the idea…i.e. back it up with examples or evidence.

01:06

And yeah…just one main idea per paragraph, please…

01:09

Skip is going to continue to struggle until he realizes that the best writing is writing [Skip stuck behind in class and girls walks away]

01:14

that has been edited. That doesn’t just mean changing the font

01:17

to “Arial,” Skip. Hate to break it to you, but you need to actually [Skip using a PC]

01:21

review and revise your paragraphs to get them into peak condition.

01:24

Okay, so Skip has finally decided to turn over a new leaf.

01:28

From now on, he’s going to make sure that each paragraph contains only sentences that [Skip writing a new paragraph]

01:32

relate to the main idea of that paragraph. If it doesn’t…he’ll edit it out.

01:37

In fact, Skip sorta gets into the editing groove.

01:39

If he’d known crossing things out was this much fun, he would have started months ago. [Poster with can scribbled out and replaced with the word 'may']

01:44

Now he just has to learn where to draw the line...
