[Coop and Dino singing]

00:13

Think about all the ways your home has changed over the years...

00:16

…Maybe you upgraded from that pretty gross, but super comfy couch to that super-clean [Family sitting on sofa]

00:20

but totally uncomfortable one...

00:22

…Or maybe your dad completely remodeled your bathroom... [Boy walks into old bathroom]

00:26

Almost.

00:27

Whatever it might be, we can all agree that homes change over time – for better or for

00:32

worse.

00:33

And the same can certainly be said about the big home for all of our homes – Earth.

00:36

Think about the Earth we have today. [Earth appears]

00:39

It's full of life!

00:40

Plants and trees that grow, giving us food and oxygen…

00:43

…An atmosphere perfect for breathing…

00:45

…Lakes of fresh water… [Lake appears]

00:46

And hey, the temperature isn't so bad either! [People sunbathing on beach]

00:49

Seriously, you think winters are cold here?

00:51

Try negative 195 Fahrenheit on Mars.

00:54

You won't be dreaming of a white Christmas in that weather… [Man in an ice block]

00:57

…because you'll be frozen.

00:59

Anyway!

01:00

This is the Earth we know today.

01:01

But believe it or not, Earth wasn't always so pleasant.

01:04

Let's rewind about, say, 4.5 billion years. [Earth spins fast]

01:08

When Earth was just a young planet, it wasn't exactly the welcoming place we know and love

01:13

today.

01:14

Think of this as the Earth's rebellious teen years.

01:16

Lots of eye rolling. [Earths eyes rolling]

01:17

And it was hot.

01:19

Like, really hot.

01:21

Like completely volcanic.

01:22

And also covered in totally poisonous gas. [Earth covered in gas]

01:25

Not exactly the kind of place we'd love to call home, huh?

01:28

But just like any brooding teenager going through an emotional phase...

01:32

the Earth ended up changing…

01:34

A lot.

01:35

Eventually, it reached the point where the atmosphere contained enough oxygen to support

01:39

life, along with the eventual presence of water on the Earth and in the air. [Small tortoise appears in a forest]

01:44

Then came along this pesky asteroid that scientists believe changed the atmosphere and caused

01:48

most of the animals on Earth to go extinct.

01:50

Which was sort of a bummer.

01:52

Then Earth got warm, and plants and animals thrived again. [Earth turns into plants and animals]

01:55

Yay!

01:56

And then it got cold.

01:57

Really cold.

01:58

Like, multiple Ice Ages cold.

02:00

…Man, what an emotional rollercoaster!

02:02

But eventually, things warmed back up a bit, leading us to where we are today.

02:07

All in all, the Earth has gone through a whole host of changes in its tiny little four and

02:12

a half billion year long lifespan.

02:14

And it's still changing today, progressively getting warmer and warmer due to a little [Thermometer increasing]

02:20

thing we call global warming.

02:21

If only we had an Earth-sized swimming pool for it to jump into...that'd be one cannonball [Earth lands into swimming pool]

02:27

we wouldn't want to witness.
