Welcome to the Shady Hill Battle of the Bands!

00:08

Tonight we have two fierce competitors who are going to come out on stage and go all heavy metal on us.

00:14

And for the first time ever, both bands are family bands.

00:17

It doesn't sound very rock-n-roll, but it's awfully cute.

00:21

On this side of the stage we have the Alkali family.

00:24

There's Lithium, Sodium, the older son Potassium...

00:28

...the younger son, Rubidium, the daughter, Cesium...

00:30

...and the family dog, Francium (who can really shred it on the guitar).

00:35

This family lives on the s-block of Shady Hill and they're ready to rumble.

00:40

All of the Alkalis are extremely reactive...

00:42

...so we don't recommend taunting, teasing, or dousing them with water.

00:46

Bad things can happen. We've seen it.

00:48

Well the Alkali's are famous for their hit single...

00:51

"We'll Kick the Noble Gases in Their Noble..."

00:55

This is a family show, so hopefully they won't play that one tonight.

00:59

Of course, they're probably just a little resentful of the Noble gases...

01:02

because they'd each need to lose an electron to become that stable.

01:07

Clearly no member of this family is currently stable.

01:11

Now to the other side of the stage!

01:13

Here we have the Alkaline family.

01:16

These guys are sort of a heavy-metal-folksy hybrid that they like to call Earth metal.

01:20

If Joni Mitchell and Axl Rose had babies, it would be the Alkaline family.

01:24

There's Beryllium, Magnesium, and their four girls...

01:27

...Calcium, Strontium, Barium, and Radium.

01:31

Um, that's a lot of "um."

01:34

The Alkalines are like a compound of metal and oxygen...sort of an Earth, Wind, & Fire thing.

01:39

(But, you know, without the fire.)

01:42

They used to call themselves the Oxides

01:44

But they kept getting booked alongside another band called the Ox Hides.

01:50

And there was a lot of confusion. So they've been sticking with the Alkalines.

01:54

They also live on the s-block, but are two electrons away from being stable.

01:58

So they're even more reactive than the Alkali's...

02:02

...not to mention harder and more dense.

02:07

Well this family is best known for their rock anthem...

02:09

"We're Found in the Earth's Crust."

02:12

It's a tune you could really hum in the shower.

02:15

Now that we've introduced you to the bands, it's time to see these guys rock out.
